NAKATA Mayu
URUSHI Artist
Through my work, I explore smoke, flame, and thunderclouds as both strength and weakness of human beings.
They are similar in terms of fluidity.
Kinma is a traditional lacquer technique from Thailand and Myanmar in which patterns are carved on lacquer surface and filled in with lacquer, then left to harden and finally polished for gloss.
I carve the lacquer surface much deeper than the original Kinma technique in order to have more layers of colors to be filled in with which allows me to create more complex patterns.
